Hi, I'm Richard (but you can call me Dick) and I'm part of the
Safex Company. I'm here to answer some of the questions that you might
not have wanted to ask your parents or teachers about sex. I'm
not going to tell you how to do it, because I'm sure you've already
found that out, without my help. The thing I'm interested in is
making sure that everyone knows how to avoid unplanned pregnancy
and STI's (sexually transmitted infections). |
|
In fact, I'm not suggesting you should start yet, anyway, because sex is something special to be shared between two people
who have known each other long enough to know that the time is
right and are old enough to cope if everything suddenly falls
apart.
But, for when you do decide the time is right, or if you're one
of those that won't wait just because Mum, Dad, your teacher or
little old me said so, here are some FACTS that could save you becoming a mum or a dad too soon, or catching
or spreading some of the unpleasant diseases that you could pick
up. |
|
|
First, let me tell you three big lies about sex.
|
|
1. My boyfriend/girlfriend says you can't get pregnant the first
time.
WRONG.
You can. And lots of girls do. And when they do, they find they've
screwed up their relationship with their parents and friends.
Then they find that it's difficult to get through school and college
exams and life is just not the fun it should be when there's a
baby to be looked after. If you don't want a baby, then use a (Kitemarked) condom. |
|
2. I'll take it out before I finish.
THAT DOESN'T WORK EITHER!
While you're doing it, the sperm that fertilises the ovum are
often released without you even knowing it. And guys often find
they've simply lost the will power to withdraw before they finish.
So don't take the risk, use a (Kitemarked) condom. |
|
3. My partner's never been with anyone else before, so I can't
catch anything.
HOW DO YOU KNOW THEY'RE TELLING THE TRUTH?
Some people are not responsible and may lie to you about their
past, in order to reassure you. The only way to really protect
yourself against STI's and HIV is for the man to wear a condom.
This will help protect both the man and the woman, not only from
HIV, the virus that can lead to AIDS, but also syphilis, gonorrhoea,
herpes, chlamydia and other unpleasant or dangerous infections.
Only a KITEMARKED condom can help prevent the spread of disease. |
|
But what if you've met a special person and you're old enough or in love
enough?
Why not wait a little longer? If you decide to have sex, there
are many ways to prevent unwanted pregnancy, including the coil,
diaphragm and the pill. But these methods will not help you avoid STI's. If you use a condom, you will not only
guard against unwanted pregnancy, but will also help to protect
yourself from STI's, including genital warts and herpes. |
|
Although the man will wear the condom, it's not just his responsibility.
If you're a girl, there's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't
carry condoms in your purse - far better that you're prepared
than that you take a stupid risk - even if he is the best guy
that ever walked the planet! These days it's perfectly respectable
and sensible for girls to look after themselves. Don't give in
just because a guy says a condom reduces his pleasure - it's not
worth the risk! |
|
Always make sure your condoms have this mark on the packet. It's
the British Standards Kitemark that guarantees the quality of
the condom. So you know it will give you the best possible protection
against pregnancy or disease. But do remember, no contraceptive
gives absolute protection. Accidents can still happen so think
how you'd cope if it happened to you - if your relationship is
not strong enough for that, then ask yourself if you're really
ready for sex!
So please remember the best advice that anyone can give you about
safe sex.
If you are going to do it, open the packet, read the instructions
carefully and use that condom! |
Our packs of condoms all carry the British Standards Kitemark
(BS ISO:4074 2002) and our quality system conforms to BS EN/ISO9001.
So you can be completely confident of maximum security when you
use a Safex product.
